Mark de Clive-Lowe
Interview by Norman Mayers Ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap, Born in New Zealand, but truly created in the sweaty scene of West London, Mark de Clive-Lowe(MdCL) is a true student of music. Having learned to play the piano at a young age and influenced by the jazz greats, MdCL sought to follow in the footsteps of the legends he looked up to. But fate had a different plan for the half Japanese New Zealander. Who could have predicted that he would touch down in London during the swirling perfect storm of future sounds that exploded in the mid to late 90s. Becoming entrenched within that UK melting pot culture as a young adult, MdCL became an essential part of the broken beat/nu-jazz/future soul culture that produced immense talents like Bugz in the Attic, IG Culture, and Bembe Segue. His name has appeared on countless productions, collaborations and remixes from the last few years, quietly creating the sound of a movement, ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap.
Now MdCL has embarked on a new chapter in his life making a major move to Los Angeles, Comprare Testosterone Anadoil, setting out on a world tour, and stepping up his game as an artist, producer, musician, and businessman. Nu-Soul Magazine was able to sit and chat with the prolific producer on a particularly cloudy day in Venice Beach, California to discuss where his career is headed.
Nu-Soul: Let's talk about your early career. When you were young what were some of your musical experiences and training?
MdCL: The earliest for me would have been my dad's record collection. Ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap, He was really into big band jazz, musicals, Leonard Bernstein, and classical music. My eldest brother always played the piano. He grew up playing classical then made the transition to Cole Porter and Gershwin, pharmacie Testosterone Anadoil bon marché. So I was hearing a lot of that. When I was about six or seven years old every Sunday without fail my neighbor would play Grace Jones "Nightclubbing". So the soundtrack on Sundays to go horseback riding was "Pull Up to the Bumper" and stuff like that, ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap. My brother was feeding me a little Sade, some Bowie, "The Awakening" really hit me. My own pursuit of music kicked in with early high school. New Zealand is a very European culture and for me being half Japanese that was very unique. Culturally it was a bit white. Ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap, At school most people I knew were listening to the Pixies, the Cranberries, and stuff like that. I could appreciate it but none of it really resonated with me. Testosterone Anadoil ordine on-line, One day my friend gave me his headphones and said "Check this out." It was the first Guy album. That just messed me up. So high school for me was all about New Jack Swing, Native Tongues hip-hop. Mo Betta Blues blew me away, ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap. That film musically sounded so hip to my ears.
Nu-Soul: When did you you move to the UK?
MdCL: I went over in 98. I got a study grant from New Zealand which basically funded me to go around the world for a year. I went to San Fran, Cuba, London, New York, comprar Testosterone Anadoil de descuento, Paris, Tokyo, Australia. Ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap, My intention had always been to go to New York. I saw myself in the neo-classical straight ahead acoustic jazz scene in New York. I wanted to play with Branford Marsalis. That was where I thought my heart was. At the same time jungle had happened a few years earlier and that just messed me up completely. It got me back to club music, ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap. At the time club music was ruled by acid house and not the funky soulful end. Then jungle happened and flipped me out. Michigan MI Mich. , I could hear the potential in it. So there was definitely an interest in the UK. Ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap, But I felt like I was going serious about the acoustic jazz and now and then have fun with the other stuff. I didn't know it was all about being serious about the fun stuff.
After a month in London I just started to connect some dots. I remember going to Giles's party at Bar Rumba. Seeing people dancing to Freddie Hubbard's "Gibraltar" and shit like that, that was a pretty life changing moment for me. Going to the Metalheadz Sessions and seeing Goldie, Peshay, Photek, all those boys, ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap. This is 98. It was a very special time. It was like the golden age part 2. So I hooked up with Nathan Haines, Testosterone Anadoil online kaufen, a sax player from New Zealand who was living in London at the time. Ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap, We caught up and I did some tracks with him for Metalheadz. Then I hooked up with Dave Angel, a techno DJ, and did a track with him. I was basically calling up everyone I knew and it usually ended up in some music. At the time Nathan had just hooked up with Phil Asher and introduced us. Next day we go in the studio and that was my whole introduction to the West London community. Phil hooked me up with the Bugz, Daz, IG Culture, Dego from 4Hero and i came across this thing where everything I didn't know I was looking for I found all at once, ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap. It was an amalgamation of the entire history of black music reconfigured in a completely original way but with complete respect for the past. Now I know, Alabama AL Ala. , that's what I look for in music. It's not about trying to redo the past or just do the future. To be now it has to have a foot on both sides. Ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap, I was the for about 3 or 4 months and then I went to New York, the place I always wanted to go.
Nu-Soul: Didn't they have the no dancing laws then?
MdCL: Possibly. I remember going to some drum & bass things then and everyone was sitting down. So maybe that was what it was. I hooked up some of my jazz friends but I just wanted to get back to London. That's all I wanted to do, ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap. The end of that whole year of travel I went back to New Zealand and I bought an MPC on the way home. I just let the ideas come out. Probably Cuba and London were the places that left a huge impression on me. I made an album called Six Degrees that came out in New Zealand in 99 and I was signed to Universal UK in early 2000, Acheter en ligne Testosterone Anadoil. Ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap, All the arrows kept pointing me back to London so I just packed my shit and moved over there.
Nu-Soul: You were really around when drum & bass really broke of into these offshoot scenes like 2-step and broken beat. What was all that like in the early 2000s?
MdCL: It was sick. It was how I imagine every musical, cultural turning point in history as being. Just so alive. So much energy, so organic, ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap. And no one gave a fuck about the business. It was just music. It didn't matter where anyone was from or what their whole cultural vibe was. It was just music. Ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap, Let's make some music together. Buy generic Testosterone Anadoil, That's more the case now globally but it wasn't really the case before. People were pocketed in their communities, whether ethnically or socio-economic background or whatever. In the West London scene you had 4Hero who were coming out of drum & bass, Bugz in the Attic were coming out of soul and funk, Phil Asher was coming out of house music, IG Culture was coming out of soca and reggae and dub. Everyone was coming from different points of view. It was a whole lot of misfits that became a community because they couldn't fit in anywhere else, ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap. I was hearing music that to me was a natural extension of what Herbie was doing in the 70s, what Miles was doing in the 70s, what Prince did int he 80s, buy Testosterone Anadoil no prescription. It was being extended a whole step further.

Nu-Soul: So what exactly is the Freesoul Sessions. You have been doing that event for awhile.
MdCL: I have been doing it for four years. Ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap, We had the London finale recently. Freesoul Sessions basically how it came about was when I was touring for Six Degrees, I had the beats already programed into the MPC. I did a little live arranging but it was mostly all there. I did a gig in Budapest and I had already done the encore and they wanted an encore. They were really insisting. So I went onstage and hit record and banged out a beat and basically improvised a studio production onstage, ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap. At that moment it really reminded me about everything that I loved about jazz music. Halvalla Testosterone Anadoil apteekki, When I was able to bring in the whole spontaneity and improvisation of jazz into the beat culture that made me excited again. So i decided I wanted to make a differentiate between having an improvised event and a repertoire event. And Freesoul Sessions was born from that. Ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap, Basically I would start with the click of the and build everything around it. It was really something special. It was a way to express the jazz in me. I wound up using that approach to my repertoire gigs.
Nu-Soul: So now the Politik which was one of my favorite albums on 2007. How did that project come about and the aftermath of that?
MdCL: Well Bembe Segue, my better half in the Politik, we first met in 98 when she did some vocals on a track I did with IG Culture, ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap. A few years later when I was making my album Tide's Arising I called her up and we reconnected on that. We found a real creative synergy and she ended up being on the bulk of that album. She ended up touring not only for that project but she became a really mainstay of Freesoul Sessions. It got to a point where we know how we work and we wanted to do a project where it wasn't about Bembe Segue or Mark de Clive-Lowe, acquistare online Testosterone Anadoil. Ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap, We put it under a fresh moniker and would see what happens. The first track we did was a track called "Money" which was what people would expect from us. But after that it became a sort of head nodding downtempo soul record but with our own twist on it. We did half the record in 5 days in Vancouver and we did the other half in one night in London. We just knocked that shit out. We didn't want to really on guests so the guests were very specifically chosen, ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap. The intention was to tour that project live. But various glitches in the Matrix made that not possible so we decided to make it a studio only project. It was also about Bembe and I being a writing and production team. We also did a Politik remix album which is like 7 months overdue. Ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap, There were over 300 entries from around the world so it's not an easy thing to pull together. It's still on the table. Montana MT Mont. , I am excited about using the Politik to showcase some new talent.
Nu-Soul: So you've been working a lot with Lady Alma also. You produced her EP and you guys have been touring together. How has that been going so far?
MdCL: We absolutely murdered New York, ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap. Alma, I think she is incredible. She has that whole soulful house tradition. It's definitely more on the house tip. But it's the same vibe with me on the live beats and she just smashes the vocals. Ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap, I've pretty much done an album's worth of collaborations. I've remixed some tracks for her, she's been on my stuff, I have done her stuff, købe Testosterone Anadoil online. We have some good shows coming up. We just have a laugh. I took her on a world tour last year and it was just great to take her to places she's never been.
Nu-Soul: So you recently moved to LA, ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap. What prompted the move?
MdCL: I wanted to move to the states for a while. It was Atlanta, New York and LA which really captured my imagination. All the arrows pointed out here. I had a great experience in London and I ended it on a high note.
Ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap, Nu-Soul: What are some of the things that you want to work on a develop out here. It is a different beast out here.
MdCL: It is a different beast out here. Massachusetts MA Mass. , I'm excited about doing what I do and just transplanting that here. I don't intend to change my spots. I see a real opening and receptiveness here to people who stick their neck out and do something progressive here with the form. There is a lot of posturing here and a lot of style over substance and i see that working, ordering Testosterone Anadoil online cheap. If I put some substance in it, you can't tell me it isn't going to work. There are some really dope artists that I am looking forward to working with. But you also see the emperor's new clothes as well. But for me it's about collaborating with artists here, producing other artists, writing and touring with them, getting my own next album done. I've always had an interest in multimedia so anything that can take me in that that direction as well.
Nu-Soul: What are some of your current projects that have yet to be unveiled?
MdCL: Some stuff with Jody Watley, Omar, an album with Replife. I have always had a wish list and I think I can start checking it off.
