Secret Stealth – Hooked On You
Artist: Secret Stealth
Title: Hooked On You
Label: Kosmica
Genre: Soul/Electronica/House
UK natives Jim Baron and Bob Sadler, aka Secret Stealth, are fairly new to the scene, emerging in 2004 with a hybrid sound that owes as much to early acid jazz as it does to the sounds of Naked Music. On their US debut
Hooked On You, Secret Stealth deliver a high energy set that spans a variety of genres and sub-genres including soul, jazz, drum & bass, disco, and more. With such a wide sampling of sounds not everything is going to work, but the things that do are quite remarkable.
Secret Stealth sound best when working with vocalists, as on the gorgeous house groove of the title track or the Brand New Heavies funk of “Drive Me Crazy”. Both tracks are soaked in soul, beautiful conceived, and aimed at the dancefloor. However, the outstanding “Dream Of You” is that album’s centerpiece. A thick bass groove gives way to charming keys and a gently unfolding vocal performance that soars during the chorus. The remainder of the album bounces between the space disco of “High Riser” and the future electro of “Something To Live For”. It’s all good and well, but nothing ever reaches the spectacular heights of “Dream Of You”. It’s a pure interstellar instant classic.
