The Rurals – 10th Chapter
Artist: The Rurals
Title: 10th Chapter
Label: Peng
Genre: Soul/House/Nu-Jazz
The Rurals are one of the busiest acts in house music.
10th Chapter is the landmark tenth album for the group and it features all the delightful soul drenched house their fans have come to love. Andy and Marie aka Tweek aren’t playing around with this release. This album is their sexiest, deepest, most soulful yet, full of funky house grooves that ooze from the speakers. The Rurals take their signature sound and tweak it with elements of acid house to supplement their usually very organic compositions. The result is an album that perfectly straddles the line between soul and electronica.
10th Chapter is definitely for the house fans with tracks like “Rain”, “So High”, “I’m Lost” and “Steps” bumping pretty hard. Each of these tracks has that undeniable house thump that will make you jack your body! Tweek’s vocals aren’t so much true songs as on previous efforts, but seem to recall the freestyling ad-libs one could expect in a house club situation. She evokes the pure abandon and freedom of a sweaty, throbbing underground club as her voice fuses with the exotic beats. But when Tweek does let out a full-blown song as on “It’s You”, it’s pure magic. This mellower production showcases The Rurals penchant for jazzy midtempo nusoul and emotional well-written tracks. If you haven’t gotten hip to the Rurals classy sound, now is your chance.
