Living Legends – The Gathering

legends.jpgArtist: Living Legends Title: The Gathering Label: Legendary Music Genre: Hip-Hop In their newest effort, the Living Legends release a seven track album entitled The Gathering picking up right where they left off. This group of eight emcees hailing from L.A. to the Bay area has created a buzz fit for underground royalty and holds impressive resumes collectively as well as separately. The group that consists of Murs, Lucky, Aesop, The Grouch, Eligh, Bicasso, Scarub, and Sunspot Jonz are remarkable on every track, which indeed is camaraderie at its best, but also makes for a crowded and oversaturated EP. The title track introduces the album with what is an unyielding and easy listen while each emcee does a good job of riding what is an overall throwback to those classic "crew" days. There is no denying "the legends" have a great chemistry that works well enough to give us an idea into each as individuals but also what they bring to the group. Although most crews this large don't have the humility to include each emcee on every track, the EP sometimes becomes drawn out with lyricists over beats that don't make for a good match. Production on The Gathering fails to live up to the lyrical prowess that is heard throughout the album. Mediocre drums over uninspiring melodies and baselines leave an unbalanced project that could have been an underground classic with more creativity and willingness to take the foundation of this album to the next realm. On the contrary, The Gathering is solid lyrically. Tracks like "War and Peace" cleverly encourage us to look at the realities of war and the Bush Administration's misfortunes, while "She Wants Me" lightens up the mood showcasing their opinions of club chicks despite the vulgarity and objectifying lyrics that are prevalent in mainstream music. Hands down, "the legends" have the lyrical ability and wittiness to inspire, educate and remind us of why we fell in love with hip hop in the first place. - Arasia Graham www.myspace.com/livinglegends Download at Itunes Download at Amazon Purchase CD at Amazon home_banner.png
