Seattle’s Choklate is a rare breed in modern soul. As an independent artist she embraces her love for both classic soul and hip-hop making equal use of both genres to produce a unique sound. On Fly, a 5 track EP, Choklate delivers a quick refresher of what we love about her: self empowering soulful jams with a hip-hop sensibility. The result is a short but dense release that packs a punch with its immense quality.

Five tracks is hardly enough Choklate to satisfy R&B fans but luckily each track on Fly is packed with delights and joy. Known for self-reflective and empowering lyrics as well as head-nodding hip-hop beats, Choklate definitely brings that flavor with standout cut “Carbon Copy”, an ode to individuality. Roller rink jam “Wide Open” allows the singer to showcase her exuberant personality and sense of humor while the title track is a sexy mid-tempo burner that lets her make use of her sultry side. Guest appearances from Musiq Soulchild and Phonte add a layer of clout to the project but ultimately this is a perfect EP. In just 5 short tracks Choklate makes a clear sonic statement about who she is musically. She continues to be a positive force within the soul community who is pushing the sound forward.
