Grace Jones – Hurricane
Artist: Grace Jones
Title: Hurricane
Label: Wall of Sound
Genre: Electronica/Experimental
Grace Jones, the queen of androgyny, unpredictability, iconic style and swag is finally back, and she’s giving it to us as only she can.
The electro/new wave diva has recorded her first studio album since the Island-release
Slave To The Rhythm … and it’s actually highly applaud-able. Judging by the interesting cover art (four heads on an assembly line gurney…they’re casts of her head!) in listening to Hurricane (PIAS/Wall of Sound) you could only expect something quite different. The entire cd is a wild ride through the always-unique world that is Grace Jones.
From the beginning of “This Is,” she proclaims “this is my voice, my weapon of choice,” and as she is the singer, songwriter and producer, we have to go along. With dubbed out, trippy tracks like the title song, which is produced by trip hop mastermind Tricky, we are put on a rollercoaster of moods and sounds.
“Corporate Cannibal” could best be described as a dark call-out to corporate big wigs. It’s full on Grace’s signature monotone sing/talk style, with heavy bass lines and electric guitars. Though the album tops in at nine tracks, with the majority of the songs near six minutes; at its heart, it is an up-tempo album. Mostly dub reggae, but with elements of electro soul as well. Stand out tracks are the love-laced “Well Well Well” and the spiritual “Love You to Life.”
Though Grace Jones has been below the radar over the years, only appearing briefly in various modeling and acting projects (who could forget her scene-stealing role in Eddie Murphy’s 1992 film Boomerang),
Hurricane is quintessentially full of grace, style and unpredictability.
